The Bureau of Automotive Standardization (BNA) was created in 1927 by the automobile manufacturers to standardize the dimensions and materials making it possible to increase the level of production. In addition, to reduce costs, improve quality and consistency of supplies.
Subsequently, the activity of the BNA was defined more accurately.
Its scope is legally defined by :
- the decree of January 26, 1984 which defines the statute of Standardization and the role of BNA;
- the Government decision of September 24, 1984 which defines the field of competence of the BNA.
The field of competence of the BNA covers the standardization of road vehicles, bicycles materials and components used in their construction, their implementation, control, maintenance and repair.
The BNA was mandated by AFNOR in 1990 to act as the French committee member for :
- ISO/TC22 - Road Vehicles - and its subcommittees
- ISO/TC149 - Cycles
- CEN/TC239 - Rescue systems
- CEN/TC301 - Electric Vehicles
- CEN/TC333 - Cycles
The mission of the BNA is :
- to make proposals for inclusion in International Standards
- to establish with its members a program of French standardization
- to assist the industry experts in other national and international organizations,
- to monitor the progress and contents of French and International Standards and, in time, to inform the French vehicle industry
- to hold the secretariat of ISO/TC22 and 4 of its subcommittees, as well as the Secretariat of CEN/TC301 and several working groups relating to the above-mentioned AFNOR committees.
